Many people compare the animated Gengar to that of Casper, it provided a much-needed comedic relief. It is the best Ghost type attacker in the game, super effective against Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon.

The Gengar Cards 

Gengar is a very mischievous Pokémon and sometimes malicious. This Pokémon loves to play jokes and casting curses. Gengar’s favorite joke is to pretend it is someone shadow and act erratically. When noticed and frightened, Gengar takes delight in this.

With red eyes and a mouth that is usually in a sinister grin, this Pokémon appears to many as scary. However, this Pokémon is extremely loyal to its trainer if they treat it well. In the wild these Pokémon love to live in caves or anyplace where its dark and shadows form. 

Category and Element of Gengar

Gengar is the evolved form of Haunter, the final evolved form of Gastly. Gengar’s presence cools the temperature of its surrounding area because it absorbs the warmth.  Gengar is a dark purple Pokémon that has a round body. It has a sinister smile, red eyes and numerous spikes on its body, with the ability to hid in any objects shadow.

Gengar can Mega Evolve into Mega Gengar using the Gengarite, and also has a Gigantamax form. It is a dual-type Ghost/Poison Pokémon that has been around since Generation I. it is weak against: Dark, Ground, Ghost and psychic-type.

1999 P.M. Jpn. Vending Gengar- Holo Masaki Promo

This card was one of five Holofoil Unnumbered Promotional cards that could be obtained as part of the Communication Evolution Campaign. The campaign launched with the release of the third Expansion Sheet on November 24, 1998 until April 30, 1999. People who mailed a copy of any Haunter card with a copy of Bill’s PC to Media Factory during the campaign was sent a copy of Gengar in return. There were 36,000 applications for Gengar during the 5-month campaign. This card features Gengar as a Psychic-type Stage 2 Pokémon with artwork by Hironobu Yoshida. The artwork features Gengar reaching with its hand and standing on a grid flooring with a Holofoil of light shining from the back of him. Because this card was only released in Japan as a promotion card, this card is very rare and extremely valuable. 

PSA Population Report:

538 of these Gengar Masaki Promo cards have been graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was an Auth. The most common grade given, with 147, was a Mint 9. Only 50 of these cards have been graded a perfect Gem Mint 10. Due to this card only being released for a limited time as a Promo, the PSA is estimating the price to increase overtime.

2002 Pokémon Gengar- Reverse Foil Legendary Collection

This Gengar card was released as part of the Legendary Collection on May 24, 2002. The Legendary Collection introduced Reverse Holofoil cards, that were Holofoil all over the card except for the artwork window. This card features Gengar as a Psychic-type Stage 2 Pokémon with artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi. It is a reprint of the Fossil Set Gengar card, with a different background of a salmon-color. The reverse Holofoil on this card shows a fire-work pattern of purple and silver. Cards from the Legendary Collection are highly sought after and worth a lot of money. Because of this, and the age of this card, this card can sometimes sell for more than $12,000.

Only 236 of these Gengar Legendary Collection cards have been graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a PR 1. The most common grade, with 92, was an NM- MT 8. Only 8 of these cards have been graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. This Gengar card was part of the Skyridge set released in English on May 12, 2003. This card shows Gengar as a Psychic- type Stage 2 Pokémon with artwork by Kyoko Umemoto. The artwork background shows a statue of Articuno and a statue of Zapdos, when turned in the light it becomes a dark Holofoil that completely covers this up. The artwork box on this card is rounded to the left to make room for the e-Reader bar code. The long strip has data for the Construction: Action application. This was the final expansion to be produced by Wizards of the Coast, and the last expansion to include Kadabra cards. Because Wizards of the Coast does not produce these cards anymore, they are becoming a collector card.

Only 382 of these SKyridge Gengar cards have been graded by the PSA. The lowest grade was a PR 1. The most common grade, with 145, was a Mint 9. There are only 63 cards that have been graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. The PSA is showing a steady increase in this cards value over time.

This Gengar card is part of the Gym Heroes expansion released on August 14, 2000. This set is based on Pokémon Red, Blue and Green, and features Generation I Pokémon and the Kanto region’s Gym Leaders. This was the first expansion to introduce Owner’s Pokémon, which is a Pokemon that has a Trainer’s name attached to it. Because this is Sabrina’s Gengar, on the bottom right corner of the card is her Gym Badge with a headshot of her on it. This card shows a Psychic- type Stage 2 Gengar with artwork by Ken Sugimori. Unlike the Japanese version of this card, this cards background is just a dark emptiness with Holofoil circles, leaving the setting discernible.

The Gengar on this card looks the same as the Gengar on the Legendary Collection card, except the artwork background is a Galaxy Star Holofoil. This Galaxy Star Holofoil makes it look like Gengar is just standing in space. Because this card is from 1999 and they no longer make the Galaxy Star Holofoil backgrounds this card tends to be pretty valuable.

This card was a reprint from the Gengar Communication Evolution Campaign Promo and features the same artwork. The difference is this Web expansion is using the e-Card Series layout.

The background of the card is half red and green, with white silhouettes of other Pokémon. The back of the card is Blue with Japanese writing. This card is very rare due to the low population and age of the card. This is a very primitive Gengar card and would be an awesome addition to any Gengar fan’s collection.
