Pokémon Energy Card Guide

The backbone of the Pokémon Trading Card Game is Energy cards. Your Pokémon cards would be useless if you didn’t have enough of these in your deck to power their attacks. Energy cards were so common in Pokémon sets back in the day that no one thought to collect them. It was a common sight to see Energy cards left behind on the school bus, or in the hallway at school. Fast forward to today and it’s the opposite.

The Pokémon Trading Card company is releasing fewer of these cards, but you still need them to play the game. There are also different types of Energy cards, Basic and Special, and that makes a price difference as well. Special Energy cards are great because some can help heal your Pokémon, offer additional damage, or add many different Energy types at once. Because Special Energy cards are more powerful and rarer than regular Energy cards, they also have a stronger demand and higher prices.

2003 Pokémon Skyridge Cyclone Energy Reverse Foil

This Cyclone Energy card was released in the Skyridge expansion in May of 2003. This card features a special Energy card with artwork by Shin-ichi Yoshikawa. The border on this card is wider to fit the e-Reader strip and the artwork blends in with the text box at the bottom of the card. The e-Reader strip contains a summary for this Energy card. The reverse foil on this card makes it glisten and change color. This card has a decently low population, which helps drive the value up.

Unlike the Japanese version, this card has a gray set symbol. The Holo in the card’s background and the use of gray coloring is very fitting for its Metal-type. This card is very nostalgic for card collectors who were around during the early Pokémon TCG days. 2006 P.M. Japanese Promo Rainbow Energy-Holo Battle Road Summer

This card was released during the EX Holon Phantoms era as a Japanese PCG-P Promotional card. The people who went to the Summer 2006 Battle Road events and reached the last round of the main tournament were awarded this card. This was a very big feat to accomplish and was a nice-looking card. The bottom right corner of this card features the black star “PROMO” logo instead of the expansion symbol. Because this card was only given out to participants that reached the last round, this card has a low population.

This card is special because it is very unlikely to ever be reprinted due to how the game has since changed. With a low pop value and how this card is rarely found anymore, this would be a good card to collect.

2002 Pokémon League Water Energy-Holo Energize Your Game Cycle

This was the third year for the Pokémon League and was widely known as the “Energize Your Game” League because of the Holofoil Energy cards that were awarded. This reverse Holofoil card was given to staff members that were overseeing the North American International Championships. This event was held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, and took place between late June and early July. These cards are distinguished by their gold foil “Staff” stamp and the Pokémon Championships logo on the card.
