Many kids in the late 1990’s collected Pokémon cards without really knowing how to play the game. I remember having a whole box full of Energy cards that I didn’t really know what they were for. Eventually, we all learned their purpose and how to properly use them.

So, what exactly are Energy cards and are they worth anything?

What are Pokémon energy cards?

Energy cards are the cards that power Pokémon attacks in the game. Usually, a Pokémon cannot attack without the required Energy attached to it, and a player can only attach one Energy card per turn. There are nine different Basic Energy card types that correspond with the Pokémon type. As well as 79 Special Energy cards. 

What are the different energy cards?

There are two types of energy cards: Basic Energy cards and Special Energy cards. Basic Energy cards have nine different types: Darkness Energy, Fairy Energy, Fighting Energy, Fire Energy, Grass Energy, Lightning Energy, Metal Energy, Psychic Energy and Water Energy. 

There are also Special Energy cards, which have a total of 79. One of the best Special Energy cards would be the Double Colorless Energy card, originally released in 1999. Due to it being able to provide two colorless energies at one time, this card hasn’t been rereleased since 2017.

What are Special Energy cards?

Special Energy cards provide more than one Energy of a specific type and have more effects besides providing energy. They may heal the Pokémon they are attached to, provide several different types of Energy at once, or even add damage to their attacks. No more than four Special Energy cards can be included in a deck. 

What are basic energy cards?

Basic Energy cards are cards that help power Pokémon attacks for Pokémon that require a certain energy type. They are the only cards that players are permitted to have more than four copies of in their deck (excluding Arceus, which does not follow this rule). The Basic Energy cards only provide one of their printed type of Energy. 

How do you get more energy cards?

There are a few different ways to get Energy cards. If you are looking for Basic Energy cards, you can purchase the Pokémon TCG: Basic Energy Box. This box has an assorted 450 Basic Energy cards.

 For Special Energy cards you can purchase a set like the Pokémon TCG: XY 7Ancient Origins Elite Trainer Box. This set comes with 45 Energy cards. 

Of course, if you are looking for just a few energy cards, a specific one, or just don’t want to spend too much money, you can use eBay or Amazon as well. 

Are Pokémon Energy cards worth anything?

While Pokémon Energy cards are a very important part of the game and you can’t have a deck without them, they are not worth much money. They are a very important part of your deck building, and you should have no less than 25 of these, however their price is not worth that much. Some cards, like Double Colorless Energy, Metal Energy, Poison & Psychic Energy can be worth a lot of money. But not as much as regular Pokémon cards are. 

How much is a water energy card worth?

They average around $20 for a 1999 card and $3 for a newer card. 

How much is a fire energy card worth?

Newer cards are worth around $4.

How much is a Pokémon energy card worth?

They can be worth anywhere from $3 to $300 depending on what card it is. 

How much is a plasma energy card worth?

They range in value from $0.42 to $19.98. 

How much is an electric energy card worth?

They average around $3 but can go as high as $700 for a rare. 

How much is a psychic energy card worth?

These cards range from $0.21 to a rare card worth $190.

How much is a 1995 energy card worth?

They can range from an average of $0.25 to a rare of $450.

How much is a special energy card worth?

They can range from an average of $1.00 to a rare of $ 500. 

How much is a double energy card worth?

They average around $0.50 but for rare ones they can go up to $225.

Can you play Pokémon TCG without energy cards?

You can, but you will not be able to have your Pokémon attack without Energy cards.
