Ultra Rare Pokémon Card Guide

Pokémon cards consist of three main rarities: Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Ultra-Rare is one of the subsets for the Rare variety. Ultra-Rare cards can come in various forms. These cards do usually have the Rare black star symbol, but they typically have additional text after the Pokémon’s name to show it is one of these types of cards.

These cards can also have special artwork that is Full Art or even Half Art. Ultra-Rare cards are also known for having extra powers and unique game features that the featured Pokémon usually does not have. Though the biggest difference is that these cards are extremely hard to find when pulling from booster packs, and almost equally as hard to find online.

2005 Pokémon EX Deoxys Rayquaza- Holo Gold Star

This Rayquaza card was included in the EX Deoxys expansion released in February of 2005. This set was popular due to the release of the Pokémon Destiny Deoxys movie, and this set featured Rayquaza as one of the main Pokémon. This card was extremely hard to find in booster packs, about 1 out of 73 packs would contain this card. Rayquaza is very hard to find in Mint condition on the market, and even harder to find the EX Deoxys-booster packs. On top of this card being extremely rare, the artwork is often referred to as one of Rayquaza’s best.

2006 Pokémon Gold Star Charizard- Holo EX Dragon Frontiers

This Charizard card was included in the EX Dragon Frontiers expansion released in November of 2006. The artwork for this card is one of the reasons it’s so widely sought after. It features a darker-colored Charizard breathing some heavy fire out of the artwork box. Both Charizard and Mew were featured as cards in this set, and because they are so powerful, you can only have one in your deck. Because this card was so extremely hard to pull from a booster pack, and these packs are very hard to find, it makes this card very valuable.

2007 Pokémon Umbreon- Gold Star Pop Series 5

This Umbreon card was included in the POP Series 5 special set, released from March- September of 2007. This POP Series 5 is so popular because it was the last EX Series promo pack that was released for Pokémon Organized Play. This Umbreon card was the last Japanese promo card to be released in English. The POP Series cards were given as rewards for people that participated in the Pokémon Leagues.

2020 Pokémon JPN. S-P FA/Charizard VMAX Charizard HR Winner

This Japanese Charizard VMAX card was released as an S-P Promotional Card for the Charizard HR Competition Winner prize. Pokémon Centers and stores held Charizard HR Competitions between July 23 and September 22, 2020. These were Limited format tournaments where each tournament winner was given this card. This was very similar to the Mewtwo HR Shield Battle event from the year prior. This Charizard card only had 600 copies that were awarded at the tournament and an additional 600 were awarded for the sealed tournament at home.

2020 Pokémon JPN. S-P FA/Charizard V Charizard HR Contest

This Charizard V card was also given as a Charizard HR Contest prize. 600 of these Charizard V cards were distributed by lottery to people that did the sealed tournament at home. To be eligible for this card, players had to record the result of a battle at home using the same resources as the regular in-person tournaments. Selected entrants were given this copy and a copy of the Charizard VMAX.

2005 Pokémon Celebi EX-Holo EX Unseen Forces

This Celebi EX card was included in the EX Unseen Forces expansion released in August of 2005. This card features a Grass-type Celebi EX illustrated by Ryo Ueda. This card has an extremely low population and is very much in high demand. When it comes to the artwork for Celebi, this card is notably one of the coolest.

2005 Pokémon Gold Star Kyogre-Holo EX Delta Species

This Kyogre card was included in the EX Delta Species expansion released in October of 2005. This expansion was very popular for its introduction of δ Delta Species. Kyogre was one of the three cards included in this set, and like most cards they were very hard to pull. This card features Kyogre as a Water-type Pokémon illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda and is based on the Shiny version of Kyogre.

2008 Pokémon D&P Leafeon LV.X-Holo Majestic Dawn

This Leafeon LV.X card was included in the Diamond &Pearl-Majestic Dawn expansion released in May of 2008. In Majestic Dawn, Leafeon was one of the Pokémon that were introduced in the TCG, this set also included all of the other Eeveelutions.
