Pokémon is regarded by many as the most popular trading card game. With many childhoods centered around playing the Gameboy games, trading Pokémon cards, or watching the Anime. Most of us grew up with Venusaur.

Most of the time, Pokémon starters are some of the most adored characters in the franchise, and Venusaur is one of the many well-loved Pokemon. Many may refer to it as the most intimidating Pokémon.

With all of Venusaur’s appearances, does it feature on a lot of cards? And what exactly are some Venusaur card values?

The Venusaur Cards

Created by Ken Sugimori, Venusaur first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Green. It is commonly known as the Seed Pokémon, and capable of Mega Evolution. Venusaur is a powerful Pokémon to have on your side during battle. It uses its flower on its back to catch sunlight and store it, once charged it can use one of its more powerful attacks like Solar Beam.

Venusaur is a very large Pokémon the size of a car, with Mega Evolution its flower grows significantly larger with a second set of larger palm leaves. This Pokémon was the mascot of both Pokémon Green and LeafGreen, appearing on both of the box arts. 

Category and Element of Venusaur

Venusaur is a large Plant/ Dinosaur hybrid that has blue skin with large thick legs. It also has red eyes, a large mouth with sharp teeth and cat-like ears. On its back is a large flower with pink petals that it uses to store sunlight to charge up attacks.

Venusaur is a dual-type Grass/ Poison Pokémon that was first introduced in Generation 1. It evolves from Ivysaur starting at level 32. Introduced in The Isle of Armor, it has a Gigantamax form as well as a Mega Evolving into Mega Venusaur. 

2000 Pokémon Promo Venusaur- Holo Black Star

This Venusaur card was released as one of the Wizards Black Star Promos. Originally released for the Pokémon TCG for the Game Boy Color. The English version of the Japanese card was included in copies of the Pokémon Trading Card Game: Official Nintendo Player’s Guide, released on April 28, 200. This card features artwork by Ken Sugimori and the background is entirely Holofoil. The final evolution of the starter Grass- type Pokémon Bulbasaur, the giant flower on its back absorbs the suns rays to release a Solarbeam attack.

This card has the signature black star with the word “PROMO” written on it. Wizards only produced 53 numbered Promotional cards before they lost their license, making these cards very valuable. Since Promos are created for a specific event, these cards were never sold but given away at special events or part of a packaged product.  This card is extremely rare to find in perfect condition making this card quite pricey. 

PSA Population Report:

There has been 1,230 of these cards receiving a grade by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a Good 2. The most common grade given was a grade of NM- MT 8. There are only 6 cards that have been graded with a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. Due to the extreme rarity of this card in perfect condition, it goes for a lot of money! This card is expected to increase in value. 

1999 Pokémon Game Venusaur- Holo 1st Edition

This 1st Edition Venusaur card was a part of the Base Set released in English on January 9, 1999. The Base Set was the first main expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, based on Pokémon Red, Blue and Green. This card is a Grass-type Stage 2 Pokémon card with artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita. The artwork shows a very round Venusaur, with its red flower plant on top of it. This card is very valuable since it is the first set of English released cards for the TCG, and features a 1st edition Venusaur.

PSA Population Report:

There have been 2,013 of these 1st Edition Pokémon Game Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a grade of Auth. The most common grade to be awarded was a Mint 9. There have been 139 cards graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 by the PSA. This card is showing a slight increase in value by the PSA. 

1995 P.M Japanese Topsun Venusaur Holofoil

This card was released in Japan in June of 1997 and was included with a pack of apple flavored gum. There are three different versions: the Holofoil as pictured above, Blue-back and Green- back. The Holofoil card is the only one of the three that features a Full Art picture of Venusaur on the front, while the other two feature a Half Art. The background Holofoil features a blue and green color with yellow- Holofoil silhouettes of some of the other 150 Pokémon. The back of the card features the same picture of Venusaur as well as some stats and a move that Venusaur can do.

This was the first origin card for what we know today as Venusaur. Because Pokémon was basically brand new when these cards came out, there really were not that popular and people didn’t think to save them or keep them protected. Because of this there is a very small amount that have been sent to the PSA for grading, making this card very collectable and valuable.

There have been 121 of these Topsun Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a grade of Auth. The most common grade given was a Mint 9. There have only been 7 of these cards graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 by the PSA. Due to the age of this card, and these being the first Pokémon cards that were released, this card will increase in value over time. There are not many of these cards that are left, due to the age and they were only produced for a short amount of time. 

2000 Pokémon Gym Challenge Erika’s Venusaur Holo 1st Edition

Erika’s Venusaur was a part of the Gym Challenge released in English on October 16, 2000. This was the seventh expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This expansion features Generation I Pokémon and the Kanto region’s Gym Leaders. The card features a Grass-type Stage 2 Venusaur with artwork by Ken Sugimori. It shows a front-top view of Venusaur with a dark background full of Holo glitter-sparkles. Venusaur looks pretty fierce on this card, and with less than 100 Gem Mint 10’s is a pretty rare card. 

PSA Population Report:

There have been 1,031 of these Gym Challenge Erika’s Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a PR 1. The most common grade given, with 507, was a Mint 9. There are only 91 of these cards that have been graded a perfect Gem Mint 10. The PSA is showing a sharp increase in this cards value. 

2000 Topps Chrome Venusaur Pokémon T.V. – Tekno

This card was released as part of the Pokémon Chrome Trading Cards Series 1 produced by Topps in 2000. There are three different versions of this card: Spectra-Chrome, Sparkle-Chrome and Tekno-Chrome, with Tekno being the rarest. The front of this card showcases a Full Art Venusaur with a Holo background consisting of various colors. The back of this card features a picture of Venusaur and a Who’s that Pokémon question. It also has a description of the first appearance of Venusaur in the Anime in episode 17- “Island of the Giant Pokémon”.

While this card looks really cool with its Holofoil and information on the backside, this card cannot be used in the official Pokémon Trading Card Game. It is only for collection purposes, making this an ideal card for any Venusaur card collector. This card was only produced for a limited number of time and has a low population, making this card worth some money in perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. 

PSA Population Account:

There has only been 16 of these Topps Chrome Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was an EX 5. The most common grade, with 8, was a Mint 9. Only 4 cards have been graded with a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. These cards are pretty valuable due to their age, limited print time, as well as not that many of them have been turned in for grading. The PSA is showing a pretty steady increase in this cards value. 

2002 Pokémon Venusaur- Reverse Foil Legendary Collection

This Reverse Foil Venusaur was a part of the Legendary Collection released on May 24, 2002. This collection is made up of reprints of the Base Set, Jungle, Team Rocket and Fossil expansion. This Legendary Collection introduced Reverse Holofoil prints, which feature Holofoil through the whole card except the artwork. This card has artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita and shows a front-view of Venusaur and its plant that is on top of it. The Reverse Holofoil on the card has a green and silver firework pattern all over the card. The Legendary Collection is a very sought-after collection, with under 500 of these cards submitted to the PSA that makes this card pretty valuable. 

PSA Population Account:

There has been a total of 471 of these Legendary Reverse Foil Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was an Auth. The most common grade to be handed out, with a total of 155, was a Mint 9. There have been 65 of these cards graded with a perfect Gem Mint 10. Due to the demand for the cards from this set, this card is expected to steadily increase in value. 

1997 Pocket Monsters Venusaur- Prism Carddass

The Pocket Monster Carddass Trading Cards were a set of 151 cards made by Bandai Carddass in 1996 and 1997 in Japan. The artwork for these cards were all done by Ken Sugimori.. The front of the card shows Venusaur using a signature move. The back of the card provides information about Venusaur’s statistics and evolution families. This card was included in the Part 3 & 4 set. Not many people are familiar with the Carddass cards and due to their age, they are hard to find in graded Gem Mint 10 condition. These cards are absolutely spectacular and really worth adding to any Venusaur fan’s collection. 

PSA Population Account:

There has been a total of 295 Prism Venusaur Carddass cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a Good 2. The most common grade given, with 110, was a Mint 9. There have only been 29 of these cards that have received a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. These cards are projecting a steady increase in value due to their age, and being made by Carddass. It is very hard to find these cards in perfect condition. 

2004 Pokémon EX Venusaur EX- Holo FireRed LeafGreen

This card was a part of the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion released in English on August 30, 2004. This set features Generation I Pokémon from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as the Kanto region. This card has artwork by Ryo Ueda, showcasing Venusaur in a somewhat aggressive mood. The artwork background has light shining down and Holo specks in the light. The boarder on this card is a silver with holo specks. This card seems to be based on the Base Set Venusaur with a similar Solarbeam attack and Energy Trans powers. Of the three final evolution of Kanto starters, this is the only card whose power and attack bear the same names as the Base Set counterparts. With less than 500 of these cards, they are pretty hard to find in perfect condition.

470 of these Fire Red Leaf Green Venusaur cards have been graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a VG- EX4. The most common grade, with 180, is a Mint 9. There have been 133 of these cards given a grade of Gem Mint 10 condition. The PSA is estimating a slight increase in this cards value.

1998 P.M. Japanese Venusaur- Holo CD Promo

This card was released in 1998 as part of the Pokémon Song Best Collection CD. All of the cards included in the CD were previously released through other Japanese promotions as reprints. The Venusaur CD Promo card features the Pikachu Records logo. This card features amazing artwork by Ken Sugimori. It shows Venusaur mid growl, and its plant looking pink. The background is a dark color with Holo circles of different colors through the background. The CD that this card was sold in was hugely popular, with every kid wanting it. Because the CD was so widely distributed, there are a lot of cards that were produced and still out there. While this card is a Promo card and older, due to the high number it makes this card not worth an insane amount of money.  

PSA Population Account:

There have been 9,057 of these CD Promo Venusaur cards graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was an Auth. There have been a total of 4,428 of these cards graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. There have also been 4,228 cards graded a Mint 9. Due to the number of cards that have been graded a Mint 9 and 10, this card is going to be pretty steady in its price for a while. 

2016 XY Black Star Venusaur EX Promo- Red & Blue Collection

This card was released as a XY Black Star Promo for the Red & Blue Collection released on July 13, 2016. The artwork for this card was by Naoki Saito and features a Full Art card of Venusaur preforming Poison Powder. The Holofoil on this card is absolutely spectacular and really makes the card come to life. The Venusaur- EX Red & Blue Collection was a boxed collection released as part of the ongoing Pokémon 20th Anniversary celebrations. Both the English and European version feature this Full Art XY Venusaur Promo card. This is such a cool card that does not have too many in circulation that have been graded by the PSA. If you were able to get your hands on this card it will definitely be worth even more in the coming future.

296 of these XY Black Star full art Venusaur cards have been graded by the PSA. The lowest grade given was a VG- EX 4. The most common grade given, with 121, was a Mint 9. There have been 40 of these cards graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. The PSA is showing a pretty sharp increase in this cards value, due to it being a black star promo card and its low number of cards in circulation.
