The first time Mewtwo was introduced in the Pokémon games, were in Red and Blue. In the game, you would read research documents left in the ruined laboratory, discovering Mewtwo. In the film Pokémon: The First Movie, Mewtwo is shown to be the creation of Team Rocket and referred to as a Genetically modified mammal.

Mewtwo is considered one of the series’ strongest Pokémon, and was the strongest in the games due to its stats. So exactly how many Mewtwo Pokémon cards are there? And which ones are the best? 

2000 Mewtwo Black Star Promo- Mewtwo Strikes Back

This card was one of four possible Wizards Black Star Promos that people could receive with the purchase of a ticket for the theater release of Mewtwo Strikes Back, released on November 12, 1999. It has a gold foil stamp in the top right corner that reads “Kids WB Presents Pokemon The First Movie”. An unknown amount of these have the gold foil stamp on the opposite corner, rotated 180 degrees.

This card was first released in Japan in the Pocket Monsters Fan Book in 1997. Later it was reprinted as the Wizards Black Star Promo, with different artwork, and included in the VHS and DVD releases of Mewtwo Strikes Back in 2000. With a PSA grade of 10, this card can average around $450. 

2002 Pokémon Mewtwo- Legendary Collection Reverse Foil

This card was first released on May 24, 2002.  The Legendary Collection is composed of reprints of the Team Rocket, Fossil, Jungle and Base Set expansions. The Legendary Collection introduced the Reverse Holofoil prints. The Reverse Holofoil in this expansion have a fireworks-like pattern. With a PSA of 10, this card can go for $700.

2000 Topps Pokémon Mewtwo Tv Animation

This card was sold in the 2nd trading card series, manufactured by Topps. The cards were sold in random packets of five or eight. There were a total of 5 clear cards in this set. This particular card, with a PSA grade of 10, sells for around $750.

2000 Pokémon Gym Challenge Rocket’s Mewtwo Holo- 1st Edition

Rocket’s Mewtwo was a 1st Edition Holo card released in 2000 as a part of the Gym Challenge expansion. This card was first released in Japanese Challenge from the Darkness expansion. This card was also the first card to have three attacks. Because the attacks take up extra space, the character art window is shorter in height than the other cards. With a PSA grade of 10, this card can go for $800. 

2006 Mewtwo EX Holon Phantoms 103

This card was released in the EX Holon Phantoms set in 2006. This particular set features Generation III Pokémon . This card features a rarity of  which is the highest rarity that there is. This card features a Shiny version of Mewtwo, with a 3D look, making Mewtwo’s hand and tail seem to jump off the card. In perfect PSA grade 10 condition, this card is listed for around $1,700. 

2004 Pokémon EX Rocket’s Mewtwo EX #99 Team Rocket Returns Holo

Rocket’s Mewtwo EX is a Darkness-type Basic Pokemon-EX card. It is a part of the EX Team Rocket Returns expansion. The English expansion was released on November 8, 2004, while the Japanese was released on October 15, 2004. The EX Team Rocket Returns expansion was the seventh main expansion of cards from the EX Series. It is the third main expansion of the PCG Era of the Pokemon card Game in Japan.

This card seems to be based on Rocket’s’ Mewtwo from Gym Challenge. They both feature a Darkness Switch attack. Mewtwo was owned by Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, for a brief time in the anime. With a PSA grade of 10, this card can go for around $3,600.

2017 Shining Legends Mewtwo GX

Pokémon -GX were first introduced in the Sun & Moon Expansion. They have a stylized graphic on the card name. This card was first released in the Shining Legends expansion. This card, with almost perfect condition, averages around $5,000.

2002 Pokémon Shining Mewtwo Neo Destiny

This card is a Psychic-type Shining Pokémon card and is a part of the Neo Destiny expansion. Neo Destiny was the 11th expansion of the Pokémon TCG. It was released in February of 2002 and had a total of 113 included in the expansion. Important cards from the Neo Destiny expansion include MewTwo, Shining Charizard and Tyranitar. Hironobu Yoshida was the illustrator for this card, featuring a glowing Mewtwo and a dark background. This card with a PSA grade of 10 can list for around $6,000.

2019 Japanese SM Promo Mewtwo GX 2000

Japanese Mewtwo GX was included in part of the Hidden Fates expansion, but first released as part of the Japanese Sun & Moon Family Pokemon Card Game set. The Full Art and Rainbow Rare versions were released in Japan as SM-P Promotional cards.

Participating Pokémon Centers and stores hosting Pokémon Card Gym meeting between July and September of 2019, held Mewtwo HR Competitions. Those reaching the knockout stages were given a copy of the Full Art version of this card, while the overall winners were given the Rainbow Rare version. In total, only 300 copies of the Rainbow Rare version were awarded. In perfect condition this card can sell for as high as $15,000 on eBay. 

1999 Mewtwo Holo 1st Edition Shadowless

This card was first released as part of the Base Set in English in 1999. The Base Set is the name given to the first main expansion of Pokémon cards. This set is the first to feature Generation I Pokémon in the game. There are only around 60 of these cards with a PSA of 10, making them pretty rare to find in almost perfect condition. This card with a PSA of 10, is currently listing as high as $25,000. Making it, the most expensive card for MewTwo.
